t thf stcurtvru tkffiumf tbunitr dtnmbtt 3 1959 sports a fink project on tuesday night we paid our first visit to the restyled winter home of the unionville jets we were very much impressed with the marked improvement in the arena the entrance has been completely rebuilt and lesshardy fans may watch a hockey match from the glassedin interior of the new section the oncecramped ice surface has been lengthened by ten feet and plans are already underway to widen the building the cobweb network of steel tressles still hovers only a few feet above the players heads but this too may be eliminated when the second stage of the building project is completed in spite of the comforts now available to todays warm blooded hockey fans we were indeed surprised at the rather small crowd that was in attendance a large percentage was local folk from stouffville and district the frigid tempera ture has long been an excuse offered by spectators as an ex planation of the fanfamine that has plagued many teams in the area the comfortable quarters as now provided at union ville has apparently had little effect on the tvloving public they are still loathe to support their local team if fans will not support jr b calibre clubs then what class of hockey will they support some b players are only a skate stride out of jr a which is regarded as almost tops in hockey entertainment and still there are dozens of vacant seats the unionville management is to be commnded for its retention of highcalibre oha hockey at a time when the operation of such an organization is a constant drain on the promoters pocketbooks pickering recreation association flops near 1000 unspent the onceflourishing picker ing township recreation asso ciation has literally passed out of useful existence according to a member mr kai vizely of claremont mr vizely startled a township nomination meeting at brougham on friday night by stating that an organized meet ing of the committee had not been held sirtce june i am very ashamed he said mr vizely told the audience that atthe most recent meeting ar ranged for last week he was the lone member of the executive in attendance he noted that al though some of the members were very interested in sports and recreation their attendance had been poor theres more than just soft- ball to be organized in the town ship he said the township council agreed to a budget of 52500 for the association to date 950 has npt been spent the township council has been most generous with their grants but the interest among individ ual committee members has been poor continued mr vize ly he described how the asso ciation could enlarge its project to include handicrafts nature study and hockey if sufficient in terest was evident i have informed the reeve of the associations predicament he stated i wish to resign mr vizely noted that he did not wish to shoulder the burden of the entire recreation program without assistance councillor ross hawthorne a member of the recreation com mittee agreed that for the most part mr vizelys remarks were correct he agreed that at tendance at meetings had not been good we need a strong and interested recreation asso ciation he scarcity of ice time made it difficult for the boys to develop into strong skaters in spite of the ice famine in ajax many of the lads skated exceptionally well a peewee entry will be placed in the zone playoffs the bantams and mid gets will enter the omha play offs their home games will likely be played at port perry the management is attempting to work an agreement with the manager of the whitby arena stouffville has the ideal set up said mr chuck mccarthy one of the coaches he agreed that the formation of house leagues was the best method to handle a large group of boys in an organized fashion he stated that in spite of the early sunday morning hour they had received wonderful cooperation from the parents they all realize that its the only time we can get said mr colin mackie another coach does the unusual hour deter the interest of the players the tribune discovered that the lads were overly enthusiastic in spite of the time three young boys john laskey 11 kenny
