mtkean adrtrtmne our editorial comment council elected to handle town business for entire year the recent dismissal action taken by the stouffviile council against police chief frank edwards has created more interest in muni cipal politics here in the last three months than has been apparent in the past ten years this we feel is a healthy sign the electorate here in stouftville has like the majority of other local towns and townships been rather lethargic in taking ad vantage of its privilege to vote as is usually the case a single act can sometimes arouse an interest which was previously quite dormant at the present time we under stand that a petition is being circu lated from door to door in stouffville which either directly or indirectly discredits the action of council in dismissing chief edwards and re quests that he be reinstated we have not been presented with the circular so neither the phrasing nor the motive behind it is too clear we do know however that some fifty signatures have been obtained we believe that the real purpose behind this petition is most import ant we feel that if it is to be pre sented to the attorneygenerals department in an effort to expediate an open hearing on the police prob lem here then one cannot be too critical of such action we believe that council is not opposed to such a hearing and the police chief has been quoted as favoring this move if however the petition is to be pre sented to council in an effort to have each member reconsider his stand on the issue then we contend that the precedure is highly improper the council is elected each de cember to handle the business affairs of the town for an entire year mem bers must face many contentious problems throughout this twelve month period and solve them to the best of their ability we would judge that they have given the current police problem many hours of thought and study in addition the advice of the ontario police association has been received their decision be it right or wrong was unanimous with each member voting in favor of the dismissal action if council has erred then the time for the ratepayers to voice their opinions is at the polls in december any change of heart now would only create a situation many times more serious uniforms the bunk wnne mere has not been too much agitation in stouffville high school in two or three towns in the district they have been discussing the idea of requiring uniforms for the school children to us this sounds like a lot of foolishness another brain storm put forward by a few people who seem to have little else to do but agitate continual changes the authority of the school covers most aspects of attendance and there is little reason to expect that parents should be forced to follow school dic tates when it comes to the clothes the children wear so long as they are respectable small businesses it may come as a surprise to many canadians that big business hasnt taken over in this country to the extent that many of us have been led to believe actually canada is more characterized by small busi nesses than by big ones interesting figures on this point were given recently by rhys m sale president of the ford motor co of canada ltd one of the biggest of canadian businesses according to the figures for 1956 the last year for which figures are available 52000 companies in can- adad reported a profit of these only 408 had assets in excess of 1000000 today too we have another reason to think that uniforms are not a good idea there seems already to be danger that children are already too uniform in their thinking it has become some sort of crime for a stu dent to show too much tendency towards individuality when one fails to follow the prescribed pattern he or she is an outcast the situation certainly does not promise to provide any great individ ual statesmen for the future what is to be gained by making a whole school full of students not only think and talk alike but dress alike as well large in number that left more than 51000 canadian companies with assets of less than 1000000 mr sale also gave figures showing that in 1956 there were 37000 manu facturing establishments employing a total of 1353000 people but only 140 of these establishments had more than 1000 employees and 34000 had less than 100 employees even more striking is the fact that 25000 estab lishments had less than 15 employ ees each big companies are in a better posi tion to meet competitive prices but a big company is often the market for smaller businesses which supply goods and services halfpast teen well first xfo happy to tell you that no ons was hurt in any iiaff of the week r i -i2tt- pbgakkg sugar and spice by vax smiley once a week whether i need i could go for i am wondering just how many of you scout mothers and fathers know just what the aims of scouting are and to brief you it is to build addi tional character in your boy so tha he may develop into a good citizen physically mentally and spiritually you may ask how is this achieved first of all in en deavouring to keep your boy off the streets he is taught handicrafts activities of adven ture camping which uncon sciously passes to your boy val uable habits of observation man liness and fair play and con sideration for others camping out in the open no matter what weather is the main way this character building is achieved so far this year i have had to cancel three camps at the last minute be cause you parents did not set fit to send your boy as a parent i know you are concerned about the health and welfare of your boy but i can assure you the responsibility i have at camp which i might add is well planned in advance good weath er or bad is far greater than the responsibility that you might have for the same period lor i have the responsibility of managing and earing for and heres to canadian newspapers although the general trend toward urbanization in canada is turning small towns into large ones editors are carrying out their function in keeping with the high ideals and fine traditions established by pioneer publishers leslie f barber chilliwack bc publisher said recently these words from the newly elected president of the cana dian weekly newspaper asso ciation are very much to the point and we agree with his statement we can be proud of our canadian weekly news paper association and all it stands for september 1959 marks the 100th birthday of the founding of the canadian press associa tion a red letter day in the newspaper world in our coun try a century ago it included dailies and weeklies and each of these groups have their own organizations while retaining their cp membership only a dozen weeklies publishing today were charter members while over five hundred canadian weeklies report news fully de cently and reflectively in the estimation of the cwna pres ident interest in a newspaper can begin at an early age the little child acquires information by the questioning method and it is amazing how many different questions he can ask especially about newspaper pictures it sometimes seems to me that our junior can ask a dozen ques tions about one picture a alberta shorthorns for jhixiken five carloads of pedigreed shorthorn cattle 123 head have just completed the long trip from alberta to ontario the entire herd of g c macarthur botha alberta was purchased at private treaty by m f farms milliken ontario included in the shipment were 70 cows 38 calves and 15 yearling bulls this represents the largest vol ume transaction of any breed in recent years the macarthur herd has been shown at the royal winter fair toronto in the past two years and has also won top honours in the major alberta shows selling in the calgary and ed monton bull sales last spring their bulls had the highest rate of gain of any group consigned keeping an eye on between 15 and 22 boys which is quite a handful but your apparent faith in me is not enough to warrant sending your boy to camp before commencing a camp i expect at least 50 to 75 percent to make it worthwhile to turn out otherwise the camp is can celled thus jeopardizing the progress of the faithful few i am wondering how you as parents would feel if you had put considerable time and etort which you could not afford into a charitable endeavour only to find that what you had done was wasted effort i am sure you would only do this once or twice before you had come to the conclusion that you were a failure or you were in the wrong field of endeavour in summing up may i say i have enjoyed working with your boy my only wish is thst i could spend more time scouting with him but i cannot do this without your cooperation but i do too as a parent realize your concern for your boy as well as his responsibilities to you out since our outdoor scouting and camping program is very lim ited 2 to 3 camps per year i am wondering where we ftand in your family i as scout master and the great brother hood of scouting which may i point out to you is not a game to be won or lost and then for gotten but a game to be learned and played for life yours for better scouting d w sanderson scoutmaster 1st claremont troop weary mother exclaimed impa tiently her friend suggested that she provide her small son with blunt scissors a scrap book and paste so he could make his own picture book from old newspaper photos this is a worthwhile activity for the child starting to school when he learns to print he can write his own captions under the pictures crayons can be used for borders color adds greatly to the attractiveness of pictures in a small childs eyes pictures of animals have a spe cial appeal it is to the comic picture strips which most school chil dren turn at once in the paper they want to laugh or thrill over the mishaps or adventures of their favourite characters unless they are encouraged to take a little more time some boys and girls grow up reading little else in the press except the comics in the senior grades in ele mentary school the scholars often compile a scrap book on current events many teachers give the pupil a turn each day describing one such happening in one family perhaps a young er childs clippings are all on local events and an older childs on world news r c holliday made a thought provoking comment there is not in the press any reading so improving as the obits i doubt very much indeed whether any one could read obituaries every day and remain a bad man or woman one of the fundamental psy chological needs is to be as sured of ones own value par ticularly in the smaller com munities the newspapers serve the community in giving men and women prominence who voluntarily contribute generous ly of their time and energy to the welfare of their fellow men thus we say heres to can adian newspapers when we were in our teens it was in a weekly column on high school events in the fergus news rec ord that we received our first training in reporting we knew the discipline of meeting a deadline and for us writing was the most challenging and excit ing work in the world when a book manuscript of ours parents almanac was recently accepted by a us publisher we realized we owed far more than we can ever re pay to editors who by their suggestions have helped us throughout the years would that every aspiring adolescent journalist could have the ex perience of writing for a news paper once a year without fail i sit down and count my blessings every thanksgiving i make a point of it i suggest you try this excellent custom which in duces an unaecuciei humility in the most hardened of us each year when i do it i feel all pure and holy for an hour or two m the dally scramble can become such an accumulation of small irritations minute frictions and petty miseries that life seems to be nothing but a great big pain in the arm but just sit back and tick off all the good things you have ni youll f like that rarest of creatures a happy wellad i listed millionaire one thing for which im deeply thankful is reasonably good health there are ieeth missing i cant smell and some of the old joints are giving me hell but on the whole im a doctors despair in ten years ive spent three days in bed and s3 on doctors and that was to get my corns pared of course the rest of my family have cost me about 2000 in doctors bills during that decade but thats neither here nor there it certainly isnt here anyway rm thankful for my three squares a day i tried living on four squares a day one time for a couple of weeks the squares were slices of bread onequarter inch thick that experience has left me to this day with a per verse urge to secrete bits of cheese crusts of bread and hunks of meat shout my person so ill never go hungry another thing im grateful for is the springfilled mattress and the wool blankets and the old girl beside me glowing away like a box stove about 15 years ago i spent six weeks at this time of year sleeping in box cars barns and ditches my sleeping partner a skinny cana dian corporal male who ex uded about as much heat as a garter snake tni happy to have a few close friends most of lit have many acquaintances few true friends i have several friends to whom shirt off their backs their last crust of bread their wives any- thins except money of course its wonderful to have happy healthy children who only re quire new shoes every three months im afraid i subscribe to the pagan view that in our children lies our immortality and in that thought i find deep satisfaction it means that my kids will probably have to take as much lip from theirs as i do from them while i lie happily mouldering in bayview cemet ery i am deeply thankful to have a gentle tolerant patient under standing wife id be even more thankful if she used some of those qualities when dealing with me but at least its nice to know she lias them bond soles begin tuesday this week canadians are oe- lng asked to participate m
