their office has advised that a solicitors oppin ion should be obtained on the legaility of the original agree ment drawn up with the gas company the pipe line has been laid within the road allowance on cone 2 dep reeve mrs mc pherson viewed the project and ordered the work stopped it was later continued after both the engineer and the road supt agreed that the line was suitably located this gas line guestion is not finished by any means said dep reeve mrs mcpher son at a regular meeting of council on wednesday evening of last week she requested that the solicitors opinion on the agreement should be put in writing a copy will be pre sented to the dept of munic ipal affairs why must we obtain legal advice at taxpayers expense we spend taxpayers money on obtaining advice on other legal matters replied the dep reeve councillor harry ashton con tended that if there was some question as to the legality of a towiship bylaw it might be proper to obtain a solicitors opinion on it did you too she concluded mrs mc pherson contended that all drawings should have been pre sented to council before the construction work was started she charged that no plans had been presented or approved by council i feel that all pipe lines in the township have been laid illegally she charged we have had an opinion from our engineer and our road supt why should we pro ceed further enquired coun cillor pupils have en rolled in the new brougham public school an increase of nine students over the attend ance figure at the end of the june term principal edwin challice for merly of bethany has 41 pupils in the senior room including grades 48 miss isobel gregg is in charge of the junior room and grades 1 to 3 she has 28 students there are eight boys and girls in grade one and five in grade eight all matters came under their jurisdiction late chess empringham born here on tuesday sept 1st mr chas empringham of clare- mont passed away in the osh awa general hospital he would have marked his 70th birthday on september 12th the late mr empringham was born in claremont the son of the late geo empringham and jane anne white for 27 years he was employed as blacksmith in scarboro junc tion his warm friendly per sonality had won for him a host of friends the deceased was a resident of mt zion for a number of years but later returned to scarboro jet only recently he purchased a new home in clare mont he is survived by his widow the former ida walton two sons joseph of rr 2 claremont and lloyd buss of rr 1 brooklin there are two grandchildren charles jr and barbara june a twin brother geo empringham resides in claremont and another brother thomas lives in thornhill rev t h fleetham of mount zion united church conducted the funeral service from the mceachnie funeral home pic kering on friday afternoon sep tember 4th with interment in pine hill cemetery the many friends in attendance showed the high esteem in which mr empringham was held the pallbearers were messrs e boulton lloyd wilson ralph jones percy jones kenneth graham and norman stephen son wins in calf scramble ross bailey uxbridge rr 4 and bob brown brechin were two of ten boys to win a 10000 award for catching a calf at the calf scramble sponsored by the ontario aberdeen angus association at the cne on wednesday september 9 1959 the s10000 is to be used towards the purchase of a pure bred aberdeen angus heifer to encourage the boy winning the award to start his own herd the calf is to be shown at the cne in a special class for calf scram ble award winners others entering the calf scramble from ontario county board has charged that local organizations have threatened to withdraw their groups from the community hall unless ade quate funds are made available to acquire the services of a caretaker mr vizely attended a special meeting of pickering twp council on monday night the claremont delegation in cluded mrs wm welsh mrs ken ward mrs robt torrence mrs lloyd pugh mrs geo mc- connell and mr eddie ortiz mr vizely explained that the revenue gained from a number of community organizations was adequate to cover the cost of heating the building he pointed out however that without a caretaker the hall was of little use especially during the win ter months he charged that no financial help had been obtained from either the township or the claremont village trustees he noted that under ordinary cir cumstances the community hall was in use for five nights mr vizely informed the mem bers that the park board had attempted to acquire additional funds by sponsoring saturday night dances but these had council agreed that all grants from the dept of education and the dept of agriculture made for recreational purposes should be turned over to the areas where earned the claremont board are entitled to this grant the council had further ag reed at a previous meeting that a 1000 grant would be made to the claremont com munity hall if a minimum of 5000 was expended the reeve suggested that further discussion on this proposal should be adjourned until coun cillor edgar james could be present councillor james is the councillor harry ashton has asked for a guaranteed no mill rate charge in pickering town ships water area the issue was discussed at considerable length at a regular meeting of council last week reeve scott pointed out that he hoped such a charge would not be necessary but contended that council could hardly make such a guarantee it was agreed that the water area should be extended to include all of the townships industrial land were not creating a water area for people to sit with their tongues hanging out and not get any of it stated councillor ashton chances of serving some res idents in certain areas was quite remote with the acquiring of a water plant it will at least be available in the forseeable future pointed out the reeve reeve scott informed the mem bers that he expected the system would start to show a profit within five years he noted that the calculations did not include commercial or industrial users dep reeve mrs jean mc pherson suggested that the wat er area should be expanded eastward to the ajax bound aries i dont care if the area ex- ringing reports from the gavel halted a bitter verbal ex change between a dunbarton ratepayer arid councillor harry ashton at a regular meeting of pickering township council on wednesday night of last week mr wm fairgrieve an almost weekly attendant at municipal meetings was ordered by reeve sherman scott to conduct him self in a more orderly fashion or vacate the chambers he re turned to his seat the brief- but bitter attack occurred when the spruce hill road ratepayer unleashed a vol ley of questions at the reeve with regard to the muchdiscuss ed consumers gas pipeline on cone 2 he charged that the pub- lie should have been informed of the meeting at which time the issue was discussed at some length he asked that the reeve should provide a rundown on the results of the council ses sion the reeve informed mr fairgrieve that the council meeting had been legally called who called the meeting queried the spokesman the reeve declined to answer but on a similar question from councillor ashton he said he had summoned the council mem bers together in an effort to differentiate between the official duties of the road supt and the twp engineer why is the pipe lino being laid along cone cope with the 10000 population development planned for fren chmans bay mr ian campbell of the dept of highways was in attendance at the meeting are you not aware of the proposed development asked reeve scott i personally think and the dept is removing three the entire scheme to date is out of four outlets to hwy 401 most unsatisfactory he stated mr campbell informed the members that certain access roads to highway 401 would be closed he admitted that he had no knowledge of the advanced planning by the dept of high ways for the south pickering area i would like to know what longrange plan the dept of highways has with regard to our 10000 people development questioned councillor ross haw thorne were crowding 10000 persons into 640 acres of land he stated we must get the people in and out of the township pointed out reeve scott he noted that traffic problems al ready existed at the lansing cut off pickering township residents are being inconvenienced bo- cause of the departments con cern for the torontomontreal tourist charged councillor har ry ashton we have a well- planned development in the making and already we are con cerned about traffic congestion he concluded dep reeve mrs jean mc pherson pointed out that a great influx of traffic would be direct ed onto no 2 highway if the doh went ahead with their proposed plans reeve scott noted that hwy no 2 was not a suitable road due to twists turns and speed limits mr campbell informed coun cil that he would attempt to obtain more information on the dept of highways future plans for the area with regard to the frenchmans bay development free polio clinics open on monday the first free polio clinics will open in pickering township on monday sept 21st the vac cinations are being sponsored by the ontario county health unit there is no charge for the service and it is available to all adult residents living within the boundaries of pickering twp the first clinic will be held at the township hall brougham on monday afternoon from 6 to 8 oclock on wednesday sept 23rd the united church hall at dunbarton will be open from 6 to 8 pm residents of the west rouge area may receive their vaccinations at st ed wards hall on tuesday sept 29th from 6 to 8 pm claremont mr keith norton returned to queens university this week where he will continue his stu dies in medicine mr and mrs l p lippcrt of according to the annual agri cultural statistics report pre pared by the ont department of agriculture the value of live stock arid fowl on ontario coun ty farms last year amounted to 16201200 the report states there were 77450 cattle valued at 12825- 400 on ontario county farms in addition there were 47100 swine valued at 1795200 16- 000 sheep valued at 381100 and 2600 horses valued at 0325800 the value of the 927700 hens and chickens was 373700 of interest is the fact that the horse population of the prov ince dropped from 621600 in 1925 to 115000 last year chattel mortgages the report also states that the number of chattel mortgages in ontario county showed an in crease last year from 1957 as of dec 31 1958 there were 3981 chattel mortgages on rec ord and undischarged in ont county legion auxiliary would like to enlarge their membership and will welcome any eligible lady at any time mrs ann gliddons cheerful personality has certainly been missed at the bank this past week owing to ill health mrs gliddon has found it necessary norton with a large number in attendance a turkey supper was enjoyed by all a presenta tion of a very nice lazyboy chair was made to stan by ross redshaw on behalf of all pres ent a- very successful meeting was held of the claremont lib rary board on thursday eve ning librarian mrs h porter is to be congratulated for her success in obtaining her class e library certificate this is given to librarians qualifying in the monthly course given by the department of education the new book purchasin committee is set up and if anj suggestions as hopes she will be feel ing much better real soon mr and mrs j mcguire and family spent sunday in toron to visiting friends mr a samarillo and some business associates enjoyed a cool fishing trip over the week end mr and mrs f udell are visiting with their daughter and family mr and mrs wm glid don the committee for the legion community mixed bowling lea gue held a meeting at the home of mr and mrs f hollingshead on tuesday sept 8 to make plans for the 195960 bowling which is to be held at the new alleys in markham starting around the first of october with a possible eight team league the officers for the season are chairman mr f hollingshead secretary mrs doug norton trcas mrs f hollingshead mrs madill from the west is visiting with her son and fanv ily mr and mrs bob madill the girl guide company and the brownie pack got off to an other season of activity thurs day sept 10 there are twenty- four brownies and twentytwo guides the brownie leaders are mrs doreen welsh brown owl mrs lorraine mcleod tawny owl and gloria han- thorne packie the guide com pany were pleased to welcome mrs connie blake as their new captain and mrs jessie mcguire their new lieutenant mrs kay hayward the former captain will help out for a month until mrs blakes health is improved mrs margaret ros- zell has also offered her serv ices and will go in as second lieutenant the company also the guide brownie mothers la are most grateful for their request for new leaders speak ing as a mother i feel certain all the mothers of all the brown ies and guides are very grateful to all these leaders who give so much of their time every week so our girls can learn guiding and how to be good citizens we wish them a very successful year also we arc very happy that we have men who are lead ers in the scouts and cubs they also deserve a lot of credit and by the same token a very successful year is wished them a stag party was held for stan benson on friday night at porter or your secretary mrs c a keevil a few books are now overdue and as other mem bers would like to read them it would be appreciated if these books were returned to the lib rary library hours are tues day afternoon 55 tuesday night 79 saturday afternoon 35 wms meeting the monthly meeting of the wms was held in the sunday school room of the united church on thursday sept 10 at 230 pm president mrs robt jackson and mrs wes lehman conducted the worship service mrs l almack rendered a pi ano selection miss mary neal a missionary whoso headquart ers are at sault ste marie gave an interesting talk on her work in conducting sunday school in surrounding districts miss shirley thompson of tweed visited with mr and mrs g taylor over the weekend she is on the teaching staff in toronto mr wm binsted of green river has purchased the resi dence of the late mrs robt forsyth the auction sale on saturday attracted a good crowd mr and mrs al robertson are enjoying a weeks vacation in western ontario mrs sam towner was forced to return home while en route to edmonton she took ill in wisconsin usa in spite of rather cool wea ther the regular evening serv ice was conducted in the park on sunday night ron hedges and dean evans enjoyed an extended motor trip recently to detroit and points in northern ontario including sudbury and north bay miss joyce oblenes of tor onto spent the weekend with her parents here mr tony van der light has purchased the les lye home mr lye plans to take up resi dence in uxbridge mr and mrs cliff reynolds spent sunday with their son doug of bowmanville mr and mrs t hammond and mr ernie baker came with in four points of capturing the j o little trophy at a recent mixed trebles bowling tourna ment at newmarket mr and mrs allan prouse of georgetown were sunday visi tors with mrs arthur prouse
