hft ho the stouftyim tokjnl iwar stpl v b59 stouffville girls trounce wheatley 176 in ontario finals play here on saturday m gayman belts single triple home run stouffville is riding towards its first provincial womens softball championship on the big bats of marion gayman gwen kennedy and lenore sykes the three local stars collected nine of their teams fifteen hits on saturday night to chalk up a 176 victory over wheatley in the first game of the allontario intermediate c finals the return con test will be staged under the lights in stouffville on saturday night at 815 oclock superb performance in the field or at the plate stouffville never looked better their defensive plays drew much favourable comment from the partisan wheatley fans a fine contingent of stouffville spectators rallied to the vocal support of their finalist entry they had plenty of reason to cheer their team and took advantage of every occasion a five run outburst in the sixth inning sewed up the game for the winners it came at a time when wheatley appeared to be on the move they had col lected three runs in the previous inning leading by a score of 123 the locals added three more tallies in the seventh and a pair in he ninth to complete the route down but not out it was a slightly worried stouffville coach who paced the field at game time his ace slugger marion gayman had not arrived and her absence would cause a decided shakeup in his defensive lineup her big bat would also be sorely missed five minutes later she entered the game cold and plagued by a flu bug her ailing condition was not noticeable on the diamond her starstudded performance could have made her a nominee for the allcanadian girl award at the plate she tore the wheatley pitching power to shreds she slammed a single in the third a triple in the sixth and rounded out the contest with a home run blow in the seventh in six turns at bat she reached first base five times she personally counted two runs and drove in two more her roundtripper was lashed down the right field line and although wheatleys jean bergman made a valiant effort to glove the drive it sailed out of the park it had not been retrieved when the runner romped across the plate cleanup position gwen kennedy a recent returnee to the local lineup has added plenty of playoff power both at the plate and in the outfield batting in the cleanup position the agile centre- field rover clouted two singles and a triple she rounded the circuit three times and drove in two additional runs de fensively she looked superb she completed one dazzling catch in the sixth inning on a texas league looper that would have gone for extra bases and possibly a home run in gathering in the drive the local star fell to the ground but was not injured wheatleys bernice wilkinson was robbed of the hit pitcher beth hodgson suffiered a similar fate when her drive was snared in the kennedy glove short stop lenore sykes was equally dangerous at the plate she belted two singles and a double in six trips to the plate she was an out only once she ilied out to centrefield in the second she suffered a brief defensive lapse in the eighth inning and two wheatley runs scored the tallies had no bearing on the outcome of the contest she completed a total of six put- outs in the nine inning game goes the distance both pitchers worked the nine inning route stouffvilles reliable joan raymer twirled a neat sixhitter it was one of her best games of the season she ran into some trouble in the fifth and seventh innings but fine defensive plays by her mates eased the tension wheatley left the bases loaded in the seventh she retired the side in order in the first and sixth wheatley righthander beth hodgson started off quite strongly but appeared to tire in the late stages stouffville batted completely around the order in the sixth six of her rivals fifteen safeties were extrabase blows her mates committed 8 errors plenty of speed aside from the plate performance of the trio marion gayman lenore sykes and gwen kennedy stouffvilles sec- ondsacker mavis trunk played exceptionally well her deerlike base running caught the wheatley infield flat- footed on numerous occasions and she stole bases with reck less abandon she poked out two singles she walked in the sixth and was safe on an error in the fourth she counted two runs ha redshaw joyce roberts doreen jarvis and joan raymer collected the other stouffville hits the drives by jarvis and roberts were twobase blows evelyn willin poled a triple for wheatley and drove in two runs martha borschke bagged a double singles came from the bats of carolyn wilkinson joy shilson donna mckean 2 and beth hodgson coach peg oneill stuck with original lineup throughout the entire contest with the
