prevention was realized this week when more than 300 persons repiesenting 55 on tario counties and districts en dorsed a proposed farm safe- tv programme which was the basis of a twodav farm safety conference held at the ontario agricultural college guelph under the joint sponsorship of the ontario department of ag riculture and the ontario dept of transport safety authorities from the ontario government and the united states outlined the na ture of the accident picture in agriculture and on our high ways and revealed the meas ures that have so far been tak en to curb the accident toll speaking for the ontario de partment of agriculture the hon w a goodfellow minister of agriculture for ontario said it is a recognized fact that machinery live stock fires falls and highway accidents all con tribute to make farming a very hazardous occupation it follows that it is our duty to under take a programme of safety education that will assist in preventing needless loss of life and injury that is all too com mon today dr j d maclachlan presi dent of the ontario agricultural college pointed out that it was useless to strive for increased productivity better husbandry and more efficiency in farming if the price that had to be paid was injury and accidents to the farm people concerned prof c g downing head of the dept of engineering science at the oac disclosed that the idea of promoting safety was not new with the department of ag riculture for years the dept through its agricultural rep resentatives and through organ ized programmes with 4h clubs homemakers junior farmers and rural people generally had been engaged in a safety pro gramme but we have to go even fur ther states t r hilliard di rector of extension ontario de partment of agriculture under whose supervision the farm accident survey will begin on march 1st just as improved farming practices are the re sult of scientific research ap plied to actual farming condi tions so can a sound farm safe ty programme result only from research on actual farm acci dents once the research is com- j pleted farm safety programs can then be devised which are based on actual farming con ditions the extension director dis closed that the survey will re cord all farm accidents over the oneyear period march 1 1959 to february 29 i960 although the accident survey will be prov incewide in scope he stressed that a prime objective of the survey would be to provide a county and district farm acci dent picture so that a specific programme could be undertak en for each area he revealed that the survey will be conducted mainly by farm people with the coopera tion of the ontario department of agriculture branch offices he estimated that approximate ly 7000 rural persons had of fered to serve as accident re porters he emphasized that reports would be confidential in that no names or persons or location of farms would be in cluded in the reports or be re vealed by the reporters but that movie camera club illness prevented the attend ance of some of our regular members tuesday night feb 24th we sincerely trust that mrs george baker will soon have a complete and speedy re covery mr archie reid was also under steam and boiling water high in the air deep canyons and rush ing torrents the bad lands in north dakota cowboys in mon tana the rugged beauty of the coeur dalene the cascades steep mountainous roads in ida ho stopover pictures of family and friends in idaho and wash- ingon completed a most inter esting and instructive view of the trip mr and mrs herb cossey also entertained us with some excellent pictures taken in their own and other greenhouses the advantage of being right on the spot at the proper time was clearly demonstrated by the ex cellent views of the various plants in full bloom the toma toes grown in the stouffville floral greenhouses were a mouthwatering exhibit one of them measured 16 inches in di ameter and weighed 2i lbs herbs films plainly showed that we can travel far afield and miss the beauty available at home our hostesses for the meet ing were mrs t aida and mrs a reid and as usual a most acceptable and varied luncheon was enjoyed by all the mem bers dicksons
