musselmans lake shows lit tle fear of the large vaccina- more than 450 dogs and cats were presented for rabies shots at the stouffville clinic conduct ed in the fire hall on thursday morning anaddit4onal 700 ani mals were vaccinated at mark- ham on thursday afternoon three veterinarians were in charge dr dennis oconnor of stouffville dr tom dales and dr t h spence of toronto handled the influx of pets a number of dogs were towed into town on the end of ropes that would capably anchor the queen mary a few rabbits were also presented one pet thum per escaped from its pen and vaulted down the main street it was retrieved by its owner after a number of close calls from passing cars dr dales re ceived a nasty cut on his right hand when one persian cat ob jected to the injection there were no other incidents the vaccination is not a li cense that permits dogs to run at large dr dales informed the tribune its the best pro tection we have but it isnt guar anteed one hundred percent dr dales stressed the reality of the rabies epidemic he noted that the disease showed a mark ed increase in domestic animals during the past summer he ex plained however thatthe main source of solution to the periodic flooding problem the scheme provides for the pumping of the surface waters over the height of land into a tributary of the duffln creek a system of ditches and cul verts were constructed to carry the water to a pumping station which lifts it over the height of land at a maximum rate of 40 cu ft per second some 1500 feet of main carries the water to a concrete spilling basin and then to a settling pond this is the first of a total of 14 water control schemes cur rently being undertaken by the authority to be completed work commenced on the con struction phase of wc1 last october half the cost of the scheme will be borne by ux- bridge township with the mt rca assuming the other 50 township and conservation au thority officials will attend a brief opening ceremony afternoon of this week at 2 oclock with in trment in the stouffville cemetery york presbytery of the united church of canada met in session in stouffville united church this week the presbytery opened with the installation of the new chairman rev douglas davis by rev martin jenkinson past chairman a beautiful white stole was presented to the chair man by mr and mrs elgin ev ans of newmarket this stole is to be worn by the chairman of presbytery when on official duty a walnut gavel was presented to rev jenkinson in acknowledge ment of his leadership as the first chairman of york presby tery area on the growing need for adequate fa cilities to look after the increas ing number of retarded children in this area at the present time the only place to train retarded children is the thornhaven school on bayview avenue south of no 7 highway the thornhaven school was started in september 1955 when the old thornlea school house was turned over to the thornhill association for retarded children since that time the facilities of the school have not been sufficient for the increasing number of people in this area it is proposed that the school serve the district encompassed by stouffville markham thorn- hill willowdale richmond hill maple king and oak ridges the association felt that- rich mond hill would provide a more central point than thornhill to facilitate the transporting of countys 20000 school children have been completely immunized against polio said dr robert king medical health officer last week the program of immuniza tion against polio has been more popular among parents than that of any other he said with very few exceptions and these primarily for religious rea sons parents in york county have not resisted vaccination against polio for their children dr king said the health unit is now concentrating on basic immunization for preschool chil dren six months and older the average number of children vac cinated at our centers is about 25 a day he said the county has been free of hew polio cases for more thai two years said the medical health officer drvklng -greeted- as an im provement which will save botli time and labor a recent announ cement by
