thi stowfylui twkjxe tomdtf sumb 25 1m3 fcgfl cards blanked 20 miicr 12 smnings iets end the argument some 111 feeling has developed over the operation of our midget hockey team here this winter last season the midget club was part of our minor hockey association and was spon sored by the stouffvllle lions a similar scheme was planned for this winter mr tom wedseltoft obrien ave resident an ardent hockey promoter here in past years has indicated that he will gladly sponsor the midgets if the team is taken from the association and entered in the north york loop the lions committee is reluctant to release the boys stouffville has never been blessed with an over abundance of hockey sponsors in past seasons the lack of financial sup port for minor teams has always posed as a problem for local promoters it was partly for this reason that the association was organized i say that if mr wedseltoft has generously agreed to sponsor one of the teams then by all means lets take up the ofter the remaining lads who do not qualify for the picked squad may still perform in the house league the north york entry will still be a stouffville club whether under the sponsor ship of the lions or a private citizen when clubs are crying for sponsors i would be the last one to advise against taking up such a proposition wheatley merchants blank- 1 team mates gave him airtight i ed stouffville cardinals 20 support here on saturday in the twelve reversal of form cwrmar dlan pnint inning opener of the junior c wheatleys big righthander vliyjjci ridh limy ontario finals the return con test is scheduled for wheatley on saturday afternoon the ser ies is a best twooutofthree games the third game if nec essary will be played on a for eign field order new start the initial contest was only one and twothirds innings old when the wheatley manager irked by his pitchers inability to hit the target ordered the of ficials to halt the game and take a measurement of the distance between the plate and the mound it was eight inches too short the card management and groundsman mr lou slack had to make the necessary ad justments to the pitchers box the contest was delayed for more than pnehalf hour the umpires had no other course than to order a new start stouff- villes 30 lead was wiped off the score sheet they had three men on base with two out at the time wheatleys big righthander showed a sharp reversal of form c t following the thirty minute in- hi rlveieam termission extremely wild in j x n the first inning of the defunct intermediate d utoud contest nevills settled down to throw a difficult to realize that the win- showed very little power at plate ter hockey season is just around i and the second round at nine in five appearances he was a he corner stouffville promoters j last year there were only six strikeout victim five times he i have not been content to wait teams in the group was extremelv agile on pick off unt he snow is falling to start j the mens league will hold eight teams in ladies bowling league eight teams have been organ ized in the ladies bowling lea gue the schedule opens on wednesday and thursday even ings of this week the first games commence at 7 oclock would favour banquet with the claremont community league on the brink of its championship playoffs it might be a good time for the management to look into the advantages of holding an end- oftheseason banquet to honour the new champs and the run- nersup it would also provide an excellent opportunity for the league heads to make a formal presentation of the business mens trophy to the winning club in past years this has been done on the playing field before a few shivering windchilled fans i believe that a dinner and dance would be well received by the players tickets to the event could be sold for a nominal fee any profits gained could be forwarded to the promoters of the banquet the business mens assoc the park board or the league i feel that such an occasion would be a satisfactory conclusion to a successful season the management might give the idea some serious thought ixse by eight inches stouffvilles junior cardinals did not lose the opening game of the provincial finals here on saturday afternoon by hits runs or errors they lost it by an eight inch measurement on a eteel tape line never in my ten year connection with local sport have i witnessed such an unsportsmanlike trick as was pulled off by the wheatley management here on saturday they were a beaten team their pitcher displayed the wildest performance we have seen here this season their infielders bobbled the only two balls they had to handle stouffville held a 30 lead and the sacks were loaded suddenly out of a blue sky the manager a replica of an amateur casey stengel strode out on the field and demanded a measurement of the distance between the pitchers box and home plate it was eight inches too short all previous runs were wiped off the score sheet and the officials ordered a new game stouffville lost 20 i challenge the umpires ruling on the protest wheatley accepted the layout of the diamond before the game was started the ground rules were explained and okayed how any man ager can suddenly have a game stopped and cancelled is a mystery to me if the measurements had been faulty by one inch he could have made the same demand according to the officials ruling having travelled around to different ball parks during the past decade i have seen many varied types of diamonds the majority are nothing more than glorified pasture fields all towns are not as fortunate as stouffville and our teams accept the conditions of rival fields with little or no complaint our diamond here apparently did not meet the specifications de sired by the wheatley team the reason for the midgame protest was as obvious as the nose on jimmy durantes face it didnt take any sherlock holmes to see through their flimsy alibi although every team likes to win i feel there should be a certain amount of sports manship connected with the game if such a thing had occurred in claremont or markham fans would have booed and jeered the opposition off the diamond spectators here registered no vocal complaint whatever all i can say is that i would advise messrs stewart and hodgson to make the wheatley manage ment stick to their precisionlike demands for saturdays return tilt you may be sure however that our junior promoters wont stoop so low as to demand a replay due to a faulty eight inch measurement whether the score be 30 or 90 lose on base paths stouffville lost the game on the base paths on numerous oc casions throughout the contest the cards had players in scoring position but each time they i were left stranded on the sacks in the eighth inning the home sters loaded up the bases with only one out they failed to ad vance when three strikes were breezed past ross madill and gord eckardt the same story was true in the 10th when lynn taylor found himself parked on third he died there the wheat- ley pitcher bill nevills appeared rather shaky with men on base but stouffville runners gave him very little trouble though they stole the pants off durhams brad mctavish this was not the case on saturday they maroon ed a total of ten men eighteen strike outs stouffville righthander harry barber never looked better his mates let him down in the twelfth inning when they com mitted three errors coupled with a pair of scratch singles the series opener went down the drain barber chalked up a total of 18 strike outs in addition he registered a pair in the short lived first game he allowed on ly 5 hits and walked one the stouffville junk pitcher fired everything in the book at the rival batsmen he retired the op position in one two three order in eight of the twelve innings until the fatal final stanza his peachs bow to altona 115 hockey anyone interested in a hackey workout with the uxbrldge ma ple leaf hockey club contact rudy clarke terry phone uxbridge 74
