the stowryulf thjwff tbmdtf uf 5 how ive seen everythina in attending baseball and softball games around the local circuit for the past decade i have witnessed many oddities in sport some humorous some disappointing on thursday night at claremont i witnessed one of the most disgusting episodes in my ten years of district sports coverage grown up players were flagrantly consuming alcoholics before the amazed eyes of sideline fans the offenders members of the uxbridge team were not satisfied to quench their thirst while seated in the confines of private cars this would have been bad enough these chaps were drinking openly in the park and on the stands one man had the nerve to descend from the bleachers and continue the practice while seated on the players bench we may not be able to play ball but we sure can drink beer was his brazen comment the labels had been removed from the bottles but there was no mistaking the contents the actions of these socalled sportsmen caused considerable concern among opposition players who like myself were quite aware of the postgame practice one man suggested that ux bridge be banned from future contests others suggested that the management should be warned before such drastic action was taken dont get me wrong these chaps werent teenage boys they were grownup men certainly old enough to know better they set an extremely poor example for the younger lads who were in the park to either watch or take part in a game the decision by some of the players to indulge in a beer- drinking spree must have been brought on partly as a means of drowning their sorrows they certainly didnt have any reason to celebrate uxbridge were humiliated by altona 181 in the first game of the doubleheader it is true that uxbridge were more or less coaxed into the claremont group in an effort to round out a six team league although i believed the northern entry was gradually improving after a rather slow start this latest fiasco has placed them at an alltime low in my books it is quite possible that only two or three players are responsible for the ridicule that has been directed at the entire team be this as it may no one can judge who is to blame therefore a black mark is registered against the whole club sport and alcoholics just dont mix in my opinion whitby girl ejected team threatens to quit exhibition game a supposedly friendly fixture belted stouffvilles only home developed into a rather heated run the roundtripper came in contest on wednesday night of d innin nn mat last week as stouffville ladies hoa in handed whitby an 118 setback 1 sr f j -i- i-u- 1- u r 1 nectea tor midgets coming july 18 a midget tag team match will will team up with cowboy brad below standard although the doug laurie jrs competitors in the lea- side circuit turned in a fine exhibition of baseball in the local park on tuesday night i personally felt that their per formance fell far below the standard that one would expect ofan a class club our cardinals could quite easily have upset the favoured visitors a couple of costly errors in the sixth inning started their rally rolling and before it could be halted the contest was in the bag i must admit that the fielding of the leaside crew was excellent they handled their gloves like young pros and their throwing judgement was letter perfect i felt however that there was much to be desired in their hurling choice ken lawrence displayed as much or more wildness than any moundsman that has appeared here this season for a performer who according to reports is already linked with the maple leafs he has much to learn a temperamental type on one occasion he refused to take a throwback from his own catcher and let the ball roll out to second base his mate in turn rolled it back he issued 9 walks and hit two batters both stouffville runs were walked in one thing in his favour the leaside hurler has speed loads of it at times it appeared as if he was attempting to burn the ball through his catcher umpire buckland and the backstop screen on the majority of occasions however the harder he threw the wilder he became the visitors were also somewhat disappointing at the plate until the fatal sixth they were able to scrape only four hits off hurler holden many of the batsmen were completely baffled by both holden and barber for players who supposedly face some of the best junior twirlers in the business they appeared rather weak perhaps its just another case where our hometown club is underrated perhaps the cards could hold their own in the leaside a league they didnt appear to be playing above their heads on tuesday night leaside jrs edge cardinals 32 in exhibition game der of the game they loaded up the sacks in the seventh in ning on a single by gord eck- ardt and successive walks to bob stover and don haynes ross madill was a strike out victim to leave his mates stran ded walk around leasldes ken lawrence had trouble finding the plate in the first inning and walked two stouffville runners in leadoff batter ted suzuki was clipped by a wild pitch and bob stover walked cleanup slugger don haynes was also a victim of lawrence wildness and received a free pass to load up the sacks ross madill was walked to push suzuki across and eric barber received a base on balls to score stover barber was later picked off first to retire the side five errors errors hurt stouffvilles chan ces of defeating the highly- rated leaside crew cardinal fielders committed five miscues in three innings short stop eric barber made two bobbles cen- i trefielder ted suzuki 1st base- man gord eckardt and second sacker lyn taylor also were responsible for fumbles right- fielder don graham was lea- sides best batter hammering out two singles and a double short stop dave green belted three singles first sacker art kavanagh also poled three hits be one of the highlights of stouffvilles opening wrestling show in the arena on friday evening july 18th last sum mer close to 1500 fans many of them children came out to watch the midgets in action the everpopular little beaver ley against the combination of ski lo lo and fuzzy cupid the main bout will match yukon eric against karl kalmi- koff in two out of three fall one hour time limit the opening bout will pair off ivan kalmi- koff against maurice lapoint the bouts will start at 845 pm cards edge markham haynes twirls 4hitter leasldes doug laurie jrs were extended to the limit to gain a 32 edge over stouffvilles cardinals in an exhibition contest under the lights on tuesday night a good crowd watched the nine inning fixture fast and wild ken lawrence leasldes tern peramental righthander work ed the entire nine innings on the mound for the visitors al though he possessed plenty of speed he was extremely wild and issued a total of 9 walks he hit two stouffville batters he was rather stingy in the hit department and allowed only 3 safeties he registered 14 strike outs although the majority of his pitches were aimed in the general direction of the town main street he did manage to take a heavy toll in the strike out department holden tires southpaw murray holden hurled fine ball for five innings rival batters couldnt cope with his mixture of drops and curves and were held off the score sheet until the sixth in the seventh 2 doubles and a single brought righthander harry barber out of the bull pen in holdens six and onethird innings on the mound he allowed 9 hits walk ed 1 and registered 7 strike outs too lata leasides tworun seventh in ning proved to be the difference in the result of the game al though the visitors failed to score again the carde could not retrieve the one run lead built up by leaside barber twirled twohit ball in two and twothirds innings he walked one and struck out two stouff ville could do very little against the offerings of lawrence in the eighth and ninth innings they managed to get only one man on base via the base on balls route but he was left stranded on first threo singles stouffville batters could col lect only three hits off the lea side righthander all their safe ties were singlebase blows ted suzuki lapped i ringing single into centrcficld in the 2nd and don haynes stouffvilles ver satile hockey and baseball per former made his debut as a pitcher on thursday night and fired a brilliant fourhitter mar- khams red sox were the vic tims of haynes fast ball as they dropped a close 43 decision to the cardinals the stouff ville win evened their four game set each club has registered two victories and suffered a pair of defeats works for win it wasnt an easy win for right hander don haynes he found himself in trouble on at least three occasions but each time he managed to work out of the hole in the second inning with mike pettit and don middleton on base he breezed three strikes past ron graham and forced geo carey to fly out to right field it was the same story in the third inning but centrefielder john little drifted back to the fence to nab mike pettits 300 foot drive in the fourth a hit batsman and a double set up a similar situation but don mid dleton grounded out short to first to retire the side plenty of speed hurler haynes was dependent mainly on a blazing fast ball he registered six strike outs a minimum of curves and drops kept the markham batters on their toes the stouffville moun dsman had reasonably good con trol considering his brief exper ience he issued three walks and clipped two batters ross madill moved in from his regular third base position to complete the battery he like haynes turned in a fine performance hits bunched stouffville bunched all their hits into two innings a pair of singles and an error in the sec ond collected one run they added three more in the third on four hits mike pettit mark hams agile mound ace hurled hitless ball in the first fourth and fifth he lacked some of the skill that has plagued stouff ville batsmen in former contests and issued five walks all singles stouffvilles hits were all singlebase blows john little rapped two safeties through the infield other drives came from the bats of lynn taylor ross madill don haynes and harry
