associate editor our editorial comment need sign to park stouffville memorial park one of the finest recreation centres in the district is very poorly advertised so far as the travelling public is con cerned true the businessmens association has done something to help by adding to the freshly painted signs at either end of town a further notice telling of our fine swimming pool however once a tourist enters town he has to ask to find out where this fine park is located we need a good display sign at the church st and possibly park rd corner direct ing people to our park this is a matter which the local park commission could well take up we believe there is ample road allow ance at either of these streets to ac commodate a good directional sign young in years but growing fast tuesday of this week was the 91st birthday of the dominion of canada while for an individual 91 is quite advanced in years for a na tion it is really very young in fact there are people living in stouffville who were around when there was no dominion of canada starting in 1867 with a ready- made family of four nova scotia new brunswick quebec and ontario others were adopted into the fam ily manitoba was made possible in 1870 by the purchase of the hudsons bay companys vast holdings in the west in 1871 british columbia which had seriously considered join ing the usa cast its lot with the dominion many remember however when there were no such provinces as al berta and saskatchewan they came into being in 1905 carved like mani toba out of the former hbc lands known as the northwest territories it was not until 1949 that newfound land came into the dominion to com plete the present setup of ten pro vinces but my how the dominion is growing as the signs read the cpr spans the world engineering and science all owe debts to canada and canadian soldiers have spread the nations fnme and her statesmen as well an influence in world affairs out of all proportion to the size of the country once again this week canada celebrates a birthday canada has good reason to celebrate her birthday she can take her place with the other nations of the world and stand solid ly on her two feet she can face the contract farming is another oiie of those ideas that started in the united states and then began taking root on this side of the border sometimes termed vertical inte gration contract farming is one of the adjustments being made to meet a different set of conditions than previously existed it ties farming in with big business operation it has come about largely as the result of the costprice squeeze making things difficult for the producer one way to meet the problem is volume produc tion lacking the necessary capital the farmer enters into a contract with a processor and perhaps a feed manufacturer to get the capital or credit contract farming started in the poultry business spread to hog rais ing sugar beet growing canning vegetable production and is now being introduced in beef production the farmer has a choice of diff erent methods of getting his share of the deal for instance in a poul try contract he may get his share through an open account whereby he receives credit for all his needs and the bills paid when the stock is sold a percentage share basis flat fee per bird sliding scale based on feed con version or a straight salary usually company capital is in vested for a quick turnover on a shortterm basis this is one of the main weaknesses so far as the farm er is concerned other disadvantages of contract farming are said to be the possibility of overproduction possible losses through misjudgment through lack of skill on the part of the director of the integrated program and possible heavy loss through disease in large flocks some advantages are increased credit resources better planning through the application of more know how higher quality produc tion and greater stability this trend in tying the farmer in with big business makes it difficult for the small independent producer to operate at a profit and survive es pecially if hes inefficient posed bullfight this summer despite the strongest protests from the humane society and thousands of others who do not want to see this sadistic sport started in canada one can hardly believe that a commun ity so richly blessed as lindsay should want to stoop to the low level of these mexican fire brands whose only love and interest is to torment torture and slay helpless animals be cause their thirst and hunger for blood and sin cannot ever be satisfied of what earthly use is it to try and teach the young generation kindness to animals when the chamber of com merce itself is fighting with both hands to lead them into the way of the serpent bullfighting is the most de basing and barbaric sport there is it can only have one result to lower the ideals of the spec tator and affect the mental health of the public particular ly the young onlookers many of whom will nourish this sort of sin in their minds for a long time to come it is all very well for these promoters to say that this bull fight is going to be bloodless etc but if these same individ uals were big enough morally they would put themselves in the place of these poor suffering animals who have no way of knowing anything else but fear and dread and their conscience if they have any would tell themselves as they have been doing in the past bullfighting has been banned in the united states by humane agencies it is outlawed in six teen out of twenty latin amer ican countries which no doubt is why these promoters like plagues of caterpillars and grasshoppers are now trying to invade new fields and lind say is weak and ungrateful enough to let them apparently the storms tor nadoes floods hail and pestil ences which have struck mexico and surrounding states for the last several months are still not enough to awaken the cha mber of commerce as to what can happen to us here also if we keep on asking for it if we think that god would send such calamities upon one without just cause then we still have to know him are we going to take the hint or wait until he says to us also i have smitten you with blasting hail and mil dew when your gardens and fields and your fruit trees were increased the palmerworm de voured them yet have ye not returned unto me i have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of egypt your young men have i slain with the sword and ihave rhadethe- stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils yet have ye not returned unto me saith the lord i have overthrown some world outdoors by mike bennett the world outdoors is a beau tiful living place where the wonders of sky and water and color and growth life and even death are vividly presented to even the most casual eye true the teeming concrete and steel canyons of the city streets are beautiful and alive but not in the same way the boundaries of a city may reach outward and with this outward growth the edifices of stone and steel must reach ever higher in to the sky but always behind this prog ress the impetus has to come from man himself a building i never grows man must con ceive this growth in his mind and make it reality through the labor of his hands yet in the great worild outdoors a tiny seedling wil sprout on a moun- taintop and in natures good time throw a lengthy shadow into the valley below a flower will bloom among the rocks of the desert and a rolling river will roll and roll and roll ever flowing there should be a harmonious relationship between the asphalt jungle and the true wilderness these two worlds on our plan et and we should all realize that some things that are a part of one world have no place in the other man will use machines and tools and chemi cals to keep his living area clean he cuts the grass close to the earth sprays poison to kill insects that inhabit his ground the air about him and the eaves of his buildings and these things man must do to en joy a liveable environment it is indeed mans world some day he may fully realize this fact and the few who have work ed hard and long to protect and preserve the natural beauty of the world outdoors will then be justly rewarded sunday school lesson them that this kind of sport can o you as t 0v threw sodom only be classified under the heading evil we wonder how they themselves would like to be thrown into a lions den or a cagef ul of starving wolves without having any way of knowing whether they will be torn in pieces or not would they feel like calling this art and pageantry or downrigiit cruelty which should not be al lowed to happen even to a dog if we are so lacking in intelli gence and good taste as to be unable to provide something de cent and worthwhile without praises markham high machines coming and going someone has said one can tell a mans age by watching him open his newspaper the young men begin to read at the sport news the middleaged read the editorials stock news and current happenings while the old fellows read the obitu aries to find out who has died until lately i have never made a practice of reading the obituaries but so many of my friends are dropping out of the procession i am paying more attention to that page if we only knew it the most sensational news of the day is the list of births here are the newcomers who are really going to do things whether they become farmers mechanics statesmen or business executives not to mention the vast army of little girls who are destined to fill increasingly important positions in the world there are just as great men and women coming on as have ever lived dr frank boreham in his book mountains in the mist points out that the year 1809 was one which saw the curtain fall on the lives of an unusual number of dis tinguished careers it would have been easy to grow pessimistic no doubt many did but he reminds us that 1809 saw the birth of some outstanding persons among them william ewart gladstone alfred tennyson oliver wendell holmes charles darwin frederic copin felix mendelssohn elizabeth barrett browning and hundreds of others who were to enrich life for all humanity now nobody knew anything about these babies they looked like all the others and bawled as loudly there were some newspapers in those days and lists of births few would read them or attach much importance to these cradles but judged in the light of the years the cradles o 1809 were even more significant than the coffins four years later in 1913 napoleon had cast a grim shadow over the world in the little town of blantyre in scot land a mr neil livingstone had a store in the outskirts of the town where men dropped in for a chat mr boreham portrays a scene one evening in 1813 when a group of worried and excited men discussed news which filtered through slowly neil livingstone had two brothers serving in wellingtons army no wonder he was worried in a room at the back of the store a tiny baby was lying in a cradle did any of those sturdy scotsmen pay any atten tion to the baby we hardly think so yet that newborn babe was david livingstone whose glorious life was to bring happiness to millions and make glad the heart of god napoleon on the way out livingstone coming in 1809 or 1813 were no different from other years so far as comings and goinjs are concerned every year records the passing of spiritual giants and the advent of others who will carry on as well god takes away his workmen but he carries on his work it is hard tor sincere men to believe that after they are gone others will arise to take their place and do equally well this is not always conceit so much as lack of imagination but the plain truth is that no man is indispensable and for every brave soul waving us goodbye there is another coming along just as brave capable and efficient a minister told me that early in his career he served 8 church for seven years and then decided to accept a call elsewhere his people were dismayed and told him no one could take his place after listening to them he was inclined to think they were right ten years after he left he returned for a visit and this is what he told me i found the church in much better condition than when i left congregations were larger and the life of the church healthier m every department i thoucht all the more of that man for making such a frank acknowledgment going our we shall study in detail several as pects of justice at the human level but first it is essential to discover analyze and under stand the scriptural foundation upon which the superstructure of mans humanity to man is built this foundation is the person and attributes of the living god any humanttarlanlsm divorced from these is vanity the springs of true morality the source of genuine ethics the fountain of charity and benevo lence are invariably and forever in god horizontal attitudes and rela tionships a mans dealings with his neighbor depend upon his vertical relationship to god a diver working on the ocean floor will be effective on ly as his lifeline to the air above is maintained social justice will be achieved only as man ac knowledges adores and obedi ently emulates his god that such justice does not widely prevail today is not the fault of the almighty right is often on the scollold and wrong on the throne because by nature mans heart is rebellious he refuses to recognize the author ity of god and the devil en courages him in his disobedi ence social justice will reign only when this distressing sit uation is rectified when satan fully both the divine moral coda x and
