which started operations in the area on july 1st with a professional staff of three under the direction of dr w eric macbean has recently moved to its new centre in the build ing formerly occupied by the post office in pickering village this building has been com pletely renovated to provide office space and facilities for a team of one medical officer six nurses two sanitary inspectors together with necessary secre tarial assistance equipment office and profes sional much of it taken over from the former boards of health is being installed and should soon be complete a 2- line telephone service together with an office intercommunica tion system has been installed to deal with the heavy volume of calls which are already be ing received activities during july and aug not unnaturally the bulk of the units work during the first month of operation has been concerned very largely with de tails of organization engage ment of staff liason with other officials in the area and the es tablishment of policies and plans rather than with the execution of direct public health measures a staff membership reaches full strength the unit looks forward in the succeeding months to reporting on the fulfilment ot these plans as a comparison for the fu ture however it may be of in terest to detail that during the first two months of operation the division of sanitation made over three hundred and fifty visits much of it concerned with the many pressing problems of private sewage disposal three hundred and thirtyone home visits were made by the public health nurses and the wellbaby clinics have been restarted in ajax and uxbridge objectives and services- public health nursing at present the unit employs four fulltime qualified public health nurses miss helen mccaul miss alma svanbergs miss alice percy and mrs agnes macdonald who work under the direction of miss margaret at kinson who came to pickering after five years as a nursing supervisor with the health unit at cornwall our nursingprogramme in cludes 1 home visiting for a wide variety of causes such as pre natal and postnaul cafes in fant welfare maternal and in fant boarding homes communi- cable disease crippled children tuberculosis 2 clinics child health con ferences which win include im munization are planned in all the municipalities in our terri tory a major part of the im- mediate programme in this re spect will be the completion of first junior sponsored by the three plowmens associa- i tions in cooperation with the junior farmers brought out 13 boys between 12 and 20 years of age for in pickering village columbus and coronation further clinics will be held at whitby on september 30th october 1st 2nd and oct 3rd ajax on october 15th brougham on octobsr 16lh and rouge hills on october 8th 3 schools the unit pro vides public health services for all schools in our area with whom we have entered into agreement environmental sanitation the generalized programme in sanitation will be carried out by two qualified sanitary inspectors under the direction of the medi cal officer of health chief sani tary inspector is mr john rob- son who has had fourteen years of experience in this field their range of work will in clude the supervision of food sanitation garbage disposal sewage disposal systems swim ming pools water supplies school sanitation together with many other matters relating to public health at an early oppor tunity we plan a complete sani tary survey of the whole area covered by the health unit in conclusion we hope month by month to report further pro gress towards the objectives we have set and which we can sum marize as a complete public health service to the community we are privileged to serve crown and finish the former internationa champion
