winter although to your reporter the plans are still a little vatif- e understand that a number of residents have agreed to offer financial assistance with such a sports programme a practice session has been arranged for oct 13th it is not my wish to throw cold water on the scheme but i do feel that at the present time there is not sufficient interest among our hockey loving public to support two oiia hockey teams here it is a known fact that stouffville will ice a junior c club and the organization machinery has already been put into motion the majority of players who will comprise this entry will be recruits from last seasons juvenile club that marched through to the ontario semifinal this team attracted plenty of interest in their climb tin the playoff ladder and on a number of occasions outdrew the intermediates at the box office i feel that by icing both a junior and an intermediate entry the attend ance will he spilt and both clubs will fiud themselves in a financial jam austahs in tho life of a porrs reporter there is probably no practice more ianrous than lectins an alkuar lineup whether it be softball hockey baseball or soccer in spite of the hazard in volved your reporter has this xveek crawled out on the proverb ial limb and selected the players he believes are tops in the claremont community league in order to qualify they must havp competed in at least three games themselves a championship the seventh concession squad reached the end of the rainbow on friday evening when they emerged the victors of the claremont community league although no pot of gold awaited the win ners the coveted bronzeplaqued trophy was received with just s much enthusiasm with peg oneills pitching prowess paving the way through the regular schedule the team had little trouble catch ing a playoff spot their hopes waned somewhat however early in the playoffs when their plucky controlartist suffered a pulled muscle in his right arm forcing him into semiretire ment as if in answer to coach warriners prayers don wheeler suddenly appeared on the scene and aided the winners cause oneill returned to action to chalk up an important victory and ivith the honours in sight nothing could stand in their way r in the final came the runhungry batsmen smote two rival hurlers in an unmerciful fifteen hit attack their secondstring pitchers looked like seasoned veterans the disheartening 164 los absorbed in the series opener was forgotten in a doordie effort they swept through to their first championship in more titan a decade the players will be the first to admit that old lady luck was a tenth member of the club in many games both during the schedule and in the playoffs in spite of this the old slogan you have to he good to be lucky still is very true the players were rnthusiastic competitors from the opening game back in may never in a single contest was the club shorthanded from a- cellardweller in 1955 to a league championship in 1957 that is the accomplishment of the peachs softball club much of the credit for the teams success must go to the untiring efforts of their coach jack warriner he is the lone survivor of the peachs club that made its initial entry into the markham township loop back in the mid mos since that time players have come and gone but he has still kept his eyes on a championship goal although not an active participant in the game he has filled in as a pinchhitter on a number of occasions tpis season j he has become a familiar figure in the third base coaching box l with the completion of playoff finals the curtain descends on another thrilling season of community softball activity what will next year bring no one really knows it is our hope that the claremont league will continue to flourish providing weekly
