carried 114 scouts from central ontario eastern ontario and toronttj re gions to london in a huge super- constellation at the airport the flight was delayed for an hour but at 11 pm the plane took off and then time passed quick ly- four hours and one hot meal later the plane touched down at gander newfoundland and it was refuelled while the scouts ate and stretched their legs the temperature in gander was only 47 degrees f and with the driv ing rain and piercing wind as well as the occasional snow flur ry it could have been any no vember day once the plane got above the clouds however the sun was shining and after nine more cramped hours in a hot plane flying at 300 mph about 20000 feet over the atlantic we arrived at the huge and mod ern london airport organized into troops for billeting in the homes of surrey scouts we met our hosts and went to their homes many of the english people are amazed at the size of the canadians for our average height is about six feet while many of the english boys are on the left side of the road is the custom here the tiny cars all painted black especially those with three wheels and the doubledecker buses on crowded narrow streets are very differ ent from what one sees when driving in a canadian city we also notice the dress and the manners orenglish children who are exceptionally well man nered the story goes that an aristocratic mother once went into a nursery and found it emp ty she peered out the window and there was her fouryearold son sliding down the drainpipe richard she said severely not raising her voice and the little boy promptly slid up again the people of surrey are the hosts this week for the canadian scouts they have planned tours for us and already we have seen such places as buckingham pal ace trafalgar square piccadilly circus the imperial boy scouts headquarters and many other sights we are having a smashing time to quote the english and a wonderful holiday there is much to see and a lot
