board meets 26th february to 1st of march 1957 the official position of the united church is one of uncom promising hostility to the liquor trade dr mutchmor said in 1944 at the london general cou ncil by a three to one vote the united church affirmed support of the nationalization of the liquor trade as a means of elim inating private profit and mon opoly control this position was reaffirmed at the windsor gen eral council last september contention of some united church members that the posi tion of the moderate drinker and his relation to the church should be studied is a fair one dr the fellowship of the united church there are mem bers who in good conscience are moderate drinkers our appeal to them is that they should re frain from drinking to help a weaker brother but the 1946 general council of our church in opening the total voluntary abstinence pro gramme made it clear that it is an entreaty and not an injunc- ion a request not a require ment a call and not a com mand the urgency of the program is vital today because of the everincreasing rate of drunken ness convictions and the rising toll of alcoholism as recorded in governmental statistics dr mutchmor said in ten years of the voluntary total abstinence programme churches have ord ered and paid for 250000 fold ers and 200000 declaration of purpose cards he announced the programme which has its focal point
