228TH BATTALION WORKS TO THE TUNE OF SCREAMING SHELLS: Hundred 8.2 Shells Dropped Near Them in One Morning Writes Capt. Piercy - In a letter to Mr. Chas. Hall, Secretary of the Porcupine Lodge, A.F. & A.M., Captain C.M. Piercy tells of the experiences of the 228th Railway Construction Battalion at the front. This Battalion was chiefly recruited in the North Land. Since going overseas its title has been changed to 6th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops". Writing from "In the Field, France," Capt. Piercy says:- "We are all well so far and are making a good name for ourselves so far as the building of light railways goes. Most of of us know considerable about shell-fire, as we have worked to the tune of screaming shells on a number of occasions, mostly night. Just this morning the Bosches sent over 100 odd 8.2 shells, all of them within 100 yards of us, and some as near as 100 yards, and all in less than two hours. However, we were all lucky and nothing landed nearer than two feet from any of our men." Capt. Piercy, after referring to the fact that he has not heard from many here than he would be please to receive a letter from, gives his present addres: "Capt. C.M. Piercy, No. 4 Company, 6th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops, B.E.F., France." He also encloses a programe of the Battalion Sports on July 2nd in Franc. "Greetings to all," are his closing words.
