Media Type:
Item Type:
Tintype - Johns Family Portrait with Newton Johns in the back centre.
Tintypes were made from around 1850 through the turn of the twentieth century. Usually around the size of a business card, they were often given to visitors as a momento of the family. The photo emulsion was put onto a piece of black painted tin and then exposed to reveal the image. Due to the fact that they are not as delicate as the versions which were done on silver, they are often found loose or in a photo album with their paper contemporaries.
