The town was saved and the enemy made a last-ditch stand among the sane dunes 1,000 yards or so west of Ballantrae. Sunday afternoon units of the Canadian Army, Central Command, attacked from their fortified positions just north of Wellington Street on the sixth concession of Whitchurch and roundly defeated the enemy in a four-hour battle, Exercise River Crossing. The project was part of army exercises giving the troops experience under near battle conditions.
