A well-known citizen died at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Friday evening in the person of Daniel Webster Groff, beloved husband of Edith Farley.
The late Mr. Groff, who was well known in Grimsby, having been a butcher here for some years, had been ill only a short time and his passing will be felt keenly by a wide circle of friends.
Born in Clinton Township, he had lived in St. Catharines for the past 20 years. He was employed at the Jones Food Market in Thorold and was a veteran of two world wars.
In World War I the late Mr. Groff served in the Royal Air Force, and in World War II in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a member of the Thorold Branch of the Canadian Corps Association, and of the Port Dalhousie Branch of the Canadian Legion. In religion he was a member of the Church of England.
To mourn his loss, besides his sorrowing wife, he leaves 3 sons and 2 daughters: Richard J., of this city; Alexander D., of Three Rivers, Que.; Peter J., of Edmonton, Alta.; Mrs. Kenneth (Norma) Potter and Mrs. Fred (Betty) Stull, both of this city; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert J. Groff, of Beamsville; four brothers, Harley, of Jerseyville; Robert and William, of Beamsville, and Harry, of Grimsby; and 6 grandchildren.
