Following a month's illness, the death occurred in Toronto on Wednesday morning, April 14, of a former well known and highly regarded resident of Grimsby in the person of James J. Groce, in his 87th year. His wife predeceased him one year.
Born in Saltfleet Township, Mr. Groce later came to Grimsby where he resided for 56 years, carrying on the business of contractor, latterly being engaged in fruit farming.
He took a keen interest in municipal affairs and was a member of the Town Council in 1901 and 1902.
He was a member of the United Church and fraternally he was a member of Union Lodge No. 7, A.F. & A.M., G.R.C.
Surviving are 7 children: Alva Groce, Waterloo; Arthur, Lansing, Mich.; Mrs. Mary Farrow, Grimsby; Mrs. Lottie Sweet, Lansing, Mich.; William Groce, Grimsby; Mrs. Agnes Davey, of Toronto, with whom he latterly resided and Mrs. Hattie Farrell, Toronto. There are also 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Davey, in Toronto on Friday, thence to Queen's Lawn Cemetery, Grimsby for burial at 2:30. The service at the graveside will be under the auspices of the Masonic Order.
