Recently a birthday party was celebrated at the home of Mrs. Emma Hill, Clarke St., when that fine old lady celebrated her 86th birthday amidst her family and about 75 of her friends. It was a gala evening for Mrs. Hill, particularly in view of the fact that all her children were living and present and that there were 5 generations of the family on hand to have a group photo taken by Robert Alldrick, as shown above. [photo] A feature of the evening that pleased Mrs. Hill very much was music for dancing which was supplied by her son, Andrew, who for many years has been recognized as one of the best old-time fiddlers in the district.
Mrs. Hill was born in South Grimsby in 1864 and despite her age is very active and has retained all her faculties. With her husband, she farmed for a great many years but on account of declining health of her husband, they moved to Grimsby 47 years ago. She raised a family of 7 children - 3 boys and 4 girls - they being Andrew of North Grimsby, John of Hamilton and Harmon of Fonthill; Ella, Mrs. Daniel Merritt of South Grimsby, Ethel, Mrs. Howard Hedden of Toronto, Cora, Mrs. Reginald Dalgleish of Hamilton, and Rosie, Mrs. Joseph Strong of Hamilton.
Shown in the group (centre sitting) is Mrs. Hill. Standing at the rear is Andrew, her son. On the right is her granddaughter, Mrs. Edward Farrell. On the left is her great-great granddaughter, Mrs. John Boyko, who is holding her daughter, and Mrs. Hill's great-great-great granddaughter, Miss Patsy Boyko.
