Father of Ontario's Provincial Secretary in Upper chamber since 1918 - Well known in this district.

Ottawa, June 16 - Hon. Edward Michener, 80, Progressive Conservative senator for Alberta, and former leader of the opposition in the Alberta Legislature, died at his home early today.

His death further reduced the low Progressive Conservative standing in the 96-seat upper chamber, which now stands at 68 Liberals and 22 Progressive Conservatives, with six vacancies.

Born at Tintern, in Lincoln County, he was educated at St. Catharines, Victoria University, Toronto, and Wesley College, Winnipeg, and became a financial broker.

He was the father of D.R. Michener, Provincial Secretary of Ontario.

He was three times mayor of Red Deer, Alta., where he lived for some years before moving to Calgary, and from 1909 to 1918 he represented Red Deer in the Alberta Legislature, being made leader of the opposition in 1910.

He was summoned to the Senate February 5, 1918.
