Full Text

After an illness extending over some months, a worthy citizen passed to his long rest on Thursday evening. George Slingerland was in his 84th year, and a native of Saltfleet Township. Born on a farm in that township, he early took up the profession of shoe making, and for many years was proprietor of a store at the Creek. He came to Beamsville some 8 years ago and opened a shoe store, having purchased the business of the late James Fowler. During his tenure of residence here, he made a host of friends and served in a number of public capacities. He was a member of the Board of Education for several terms and also its chairman. He was also one of the first presidents of the Poultry Association, and continued to serve in various offices in the association, being president at the time of his demise. Deceased was always an ardent and enthusiastic poultry fancier, and to his energy much of the success of the local show has been due. He was also President of the Ontario Poultry Association in 1917. The funeral will be conducted by his old lodge, Wentworth, A.F. & A.M., Stoney Creek, of which he was a past master. Mr. Slingerland was twice married. He is survived by his wife and one son, living at Niagara Falls, N.Y. Deceased was a staunch member of the Baptist Church, and seldom failed to be present at its services. His passing will leave a void among those who know him so well.
