Full Text

The death occurred in Hamilton Hospital on Sunday morning, August 24th of John Charles McCartney, one of Grimsby's best known and most popular citizens. The deceased had been in poor health for nearly 2 years and for the past six months had been confined to his room almost continuously. On Friday the doctors deemed it advisable to move him to Hamilton Hospital where he passed away on Sunday. "Charlie" McCartney moved to Grimsby with his family about 18 years ago to take charge of the Dominion Canners factory here, which position he held up till about 8 years ago, leaving it to go on the road for a firm manufacturing smoke consumers. He then formed a partnership with C.H. Kirk in the real estate business. A little over 2 years ago he took over the management of the Hotel Grimsby and conducted it up till the time of his death. Previous to his coming to Grimsby he managed several canning factories throughout the province, coming to Grimsby from Niagara-on-the-Lake. Deceased leaves a wife and three children, Miss Reta, Miss Margaret and Clifford. The remains were taken to Delhi, Ontario for burial, the last obsequies taking place on Wednesday afternoon last with Masonic honors. The pall-bearers were six of his Masonic brethren from Grimsby, Messrs. H.H. Farrell, J.B. Marlatt, J.H. Culp, James Theal, J.H. Gibson and A.E. Phipps. The Masonic services at the grave were conducted by Reeve C.T. Farrell.
