Full Text

One of the best known and highly esteemed residents of Caistor passed away Monday, April 10, when Mary Clough Green, widow of the late John W. Green, died at her home in Abingdon. Mrs. Green was born in Suffolk, England, 94 years ago, coming to this country with her parents in 1883; and was 13 weeks on the ocean. They settled about a mile south of Stoney Creek. She was the last of a family of 11, six sisters and four brothers having gone before. In 1847 she was married to John W. Green, who predeceased her in 1910. For 75 years she has lived on the farm where she died. For many years she proved a veritable Dorcas in her community, going to the aid of all who were in trouble, and even in later years, though unable to leave her home much, many a needy one was helped, and many a heavy heart comforted by her. She attended to all her household duties until a few days previous to her death, and her mind was clear and her memory remarkable to the last. Throughout her life she was a staunch Presbyterian, being one of the first members of the Abingdon Presbyterian Church, which was built on land given by her husband, as was also a big share of the materials and work. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Bush of Caistor and Mrs. David Jackson of Grimsby, and five sons, Levi and George of Seattle; Andrew of Los Angeles; John of Caistor, and three great great grandchildren. The funeral took place on Wednesday to the Abingdon Presbyterian cemetery, the services being conducted by the Rev. John Ward. The pallbearers were six grandsons, John and Levi McDougall, Allan and Walter Green, Murray Bush and Herman Jackson - Hamilton Spectator.
