William J. Schwab,86,of Grimsby, died last Thursday at Westminster Hospital in London, Ont. A lifelong resident of the Grimsby area, he was born in North Grimsby Township, a son of Frederick and Martha Schwab. A building contractor by trade, he was in partnership with his son, Frederick, for many years until retiring in 1942. Mr. Schwab enlisted in the 98th Battalion, and served overseas with the Royal Engineers in World War 1. In his younger days he was prominent throughout the Peninsula as an athlete and was considered one of the best 100 yard and 220 yard sprinters in the district. In the early 1890's Grimsby Fire Department has a hook and ladder running team which several times were champions of Ontario and Western New York. Mr. Schwab was the last surviving member of this team. During his later years he became prominent as a lawn bowler and had many trophies of his prowess on the greens. He was a member of Union Lodge AF and AM No. 7 GRC, and of West Lincoln Branch No. 127, Canadian Legion, which provided a guard of honor at the funeral service. Surviving are two sons, Frederick R., of Grimsby, and Clifford W., of Toronto; a daughter, Mrs. Edward Sullivan (Myrtle) of Grimsby; also 10 grandchildren. The body rested at the Stonehouse-Whitcomb Funeral Home, Mountain Street, Grimsby, for service in the chapel on Saturday. Burial was in Queen's Lawn Cemetery.
