Another human tally to German "Kultur" has been registered. There died at Brant Hospital, Burlington, on Saturday, April 30, 1921, Walter Phipps, well known to all members of the 98th Battalion and to many other citizens of Grimsby. Mr. Phipps was born in Atfield, Middlesex, England, in 1870 and came to Canada and Grimsby about 14 years ago with his wife and family. He had spent 12 years in the Imperial Army in India and South Africa. While in India he suffered from what is known as Dhulia tap (sunstroke), and that contributed to his recent illness. When the call came in 1914 he joined the 98th Battalion and early in 1916 went overseas. In 1918 he was wounded in France and was invalided home to Canada and after partial recovery took a vocational course in traction engineering, and worked on the County steam roller for a couple of seasons. His experience in France had undermined his health to too great an extent, but with the courage that took him "over there", he fought it out until about a month ago when the doctors ordered him to Brant with but little hope for recovery. To mourn his loss there are his wife, five daughters and one son: Miss Ellen at home; Mrs. Tooker of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; Mrs. G.J Craig of Grimsby; Joseph, Walter, Florence and Ethel at home. The funeral took place on Monday, May 2, the Rev. Father Longo holding requiem high mass at St. Joseph's Church at 10 a.m., from thence to Queen's Lawn Cemetery where interment took place. Members of the G.W.V.A. and of the Boy Scouts attended and fired the salute over the grave and sounded "Last Post".
