Monday evening marked the passing of another of Grimsby's much respected citizens. Mr. J.W. Eaton, after a painful illness of several months, slipped away to his rest. Mr. Eaton was born near Portland in Leeds, County, Ontario in 1858 of Irish parentage. In his early days he worked on the farm and for a brief time taught school. But the call of the West appealed to his young manhood and in 1880 he, accompanied by his brother, located on a homestead in the district of Turtle Mountain, South Western Manitoba. They had all the experience of the primitive settlers in its sparse communities, remote from railroads. In 1884 Mr. Eaton returned to his former home long enough to claim as his wife Miss Sheldon of that neighborhood. After about 23 years in the west, the family settled at Smith Falls, Ont., but finally located at Grimsby where Mr. Eaton engaged in fruit farming and also followed the business as a coal merchant. He was of a quiet and kindly disposition but of a clear and earnest mind. He took an intelligent interest in public affairs. From his early manhood he was a consistent and active member of the Methodist Church, and at the time of his death and for some years previous was Recording Steward of the local church. He bore his trying illness with constant patience and maintained to the end a steadfast and beautiful faith. The sympathy of a host of friends will go out to his bereaved wife and to the members of his family, Mrs. H.S. Smith, now at Lockport, N.Y., Miss Eva at home, and Gordon L., who for some years has been associated with his father in business.
