On Wednesday, September 29th, 1920, there died in Grimsby Mrs. Thomas Sowerby, well known and respected by all the older residents of Grimsby. Mrs. Sowerby had been in poor health for quite a long time but her demise was not looked for. Hannah Shepherd was born in Appleby, Westmoreland, England in 1853 and was married there in 1876 to Thomas Sowerby. In 1891 Mr. and Mrs. Sowerby and their daughter came to Canada coming direct to Grimsby. They purchased a home on the Ridge Road and went into gardening and fruit growing, at which they continued for 29 years during 25 of which Mrs. Sowerby attended the Grimsby Park market and made many friends among the summer residents. It was only in April of this year that they removed to Grimsby. Mrs. Sowerby is survived by her husband and only daughter, Mrs. Nellie Cope of Hamilton. The funeral took place on Wednesday, Sept. 24 to Queen's Lawn Cemetery, the Rev. L.H. Currie of St. John's Presbyterian Church of which Mrs. Sowerby was an adherent, conducting the burial services. The pallbearers were Arthur Hewson, W.C.Durham, N.M. Walker, Fred Andrews,C.H. Beird and Hugh Cross. [Date correction: Ancestry: date of death was 22 September, 1920)
