Full Text

On Thursday, Aug. 9, there passed away at the old Althouse homestead in North Grimsby, Mr. David Althouse, a man who had passed his entire life of almost 80 years either on the farm where he died or on the adjoining one where he was born. The late David Althouse was born on the farm now owned by Mr. Arthur Smith, but when he was four years of age, his parents moved onto the old Althouse homestead which has been taken up by his grandfather who came from Pennsylvania in 1801, and the farm has remained in the Althouse family ever since, covering a period of over 116 years. Mr. David Althouse was married to Margaret Angle of Wainfleet about 55 years ago. She predeceased him about 10 years. The late David Althouse was a man of a high standard of integrity, quiet and inoffensive, an excellent friend and neighbor, and highly respected by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. In politics he was a Conservative, in religion a Presbyterian. He is survived by one brother, George of Corral, Mich., a man of about 82 years of age; two sons, Archibald E. of Handel, Sask., and John on the homestead; and two daughters, Mrs. John Webb of Hamilton and Mrs. James Ready of Vinemount. The funeral, which was largely attended by relatives and old acquaintances, took place on Saturday, August 11, services being held at the house at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and interment taking place at Queen's Lawn Cemetery, Grimsby. The Rev. L.H. Currie of St. John's Presbyterian Church, officiated, assisted by Rev. Mr. Clarke, Methodist minister of Tapleytown. The pallbearers were C.E. Barr, J.M Stewart, W.H. VanDuzer, Freeman Bowslaugh, Hamilton Sturch and C.P. Hockey.
