Full Text

Moses Franklin Rittenhouse, millionaire lumberman of Chicago, a native of the county of Lincoln, who has spent several hundred thousand dollars in bestowing urban advantages upon the rural community at the border land of Louth and Clinton townships, now known as Vineland, where he was born 69 years ago, died Sunday morning at Chicago. The remains will be brought to Vineland for burial Tuesday. He was of German ancestry and was born eight miles west of St. Catharines, where Vineland now stands, in 1846. He attended school only in the winter, working on the farm in the summer. At the age of 18 years, he went to Chicago and sought employment in the lumber business, later joining the partnership with Jesse R. Embree, which afterwards developed and was operated as a joint stock company, of which he was president. He was also president of the Arkansas Lumber Company of Warren, Ark., and an official or director in many other industrial concerns. His occasional visits to Vineland were made a general holiday in the vicinity. His benefactions to Vineland include a $30,000 roadway leading to the Ontario government's experimental farm and the purchase and gift to the government of the land on which the experimental station is established. He built Victoria Hall, a palatial building, and supplied educational speakers each winter; purchased and endowed the park with a bandstand; bore half the cost of the Rittenhouse school, one of the finest in the country, added a library and stacked it with 2000 volumes; purchased and presented to the people a new cemetery with walls and ornamental entrance, any revenue from which is to be spent on beautifying the place. Only last year Mr. Rittenhouse began the establishment of a long floral boulevard, one side of which has already been completed.
