Full Text

The funeral of Major Spillette took place on Monday morning. The services at the home were conducted by Rev. A.H. Priest. Messrs. George Burch, John McClive, Colin Blaine, J.J. Moylan, W.B. Clark, H.J. Johnson acted as bearers to the Grand Trunk station. The services at Grimsby were conducted by Rev. J.A. Ballard. Six veterans who were on duty with Major Spillette at the front in 1866 acted as bearers: J.W. Duval, B.Book, J.F. Randall, Wm. Clark, S. Oakley and W. Muir. Interment in Grimsby cemetery. The late Major Spillette served in the campaign of Indian Mutiny 1857-58, was present at the Battle of Bardle Ke Serai, 8th June 1857, and at Delhi throughout the whole of the siege operations, including the assault and capture of the city. Action of Boolundsure, 28th September, Alyghur 5th October, Battle of Agara, 10th October, affair at Kanage, 22nd October; Relief of Lucknow under Sir Colin Campbell, G.C.B. Attack on mutineers at Cownpore and Secia Rhat in December 1857. Operations against Lucknow from 2nd - 19th Mar. 1850. Attack on Rooyah Fort, 15th April. Action at Alligunge, 22nd April (wounded). Major Spillette lived in Grimsby for years in the building now run as the Village Inn.
