Full Text

The citizens of Grimsby and vicinity were greatly shocked on Friday evening, March 5, to learn of the sudden death of Mr. George E. Alexander, one of Grimsby's most highly respected citizens. Since the death of his mother a few months ago, Mr. Alexander has been living at the Lincoln House and following his usual occupation of bookkeeping and auditing, having been engaged recently on the village accounts. He was in his usual good health up until Friday evening and after partaking of his supper complained of a slight weakness, and before he could be assisted to his room he had passed away. Doctors McLay and Millyard were of the opinion that death was due to heart trouble. The deceased gentleman was a son of the Rev. James Lynn Alexander...his mother (deceased a short time ago) was the youngest daughter of one of the pioneers of Grimsby, the late Robert Nelles. The deceased gentleman was probably born in the historic house on the Stoney Creek battle ground, where his father resided for some time, and where his brother, Dr. R.A. Alexander, was born. After receiving a commercial education, the late Mr. Alexander followed the profession of banking for many years, commencing his career with the old Gore Bank of Hamilton and afterwards working for the Merchants and other banks in the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec. For the past number of years the deceased has resided in Grimsby, following the occupation of accounting and auditing, and residing with his mother up until the time of her death. He was a very quiet, inoffensive man and was well liked by a large circle of acquaintances. In politics he was a staunch Conservative, in religion an Episcopalian. He is survived by one brother, Dr. R.A. Alexander, and one sister, Mrs. K.N. Grout. The funeral took place from the residence of Dr. Alexander, on Monday afternoon to St. Andrew's Church Cemetery, the service being conducted by the Rector of St. Andrew's Church, Rev. J. Allan Ballard.
