The Township of Saltfleet lost one of its most highly respected citizens when Wm. Hugo Carpenter passed away on Saturday last at his home, near Vinemount, in his 69th year. The deceased gentleman has been confined to his home for the past number of years with a severe attack of paralysis, and has not been able to attend to his business nor take any active part in the affairs of the township for over 10 years. In earlier life, Mr. Carpenter was an energetic farmer and stock breeder and later was one of the prime movers in establishing the cheese factory and creamery at Vinemount. He was among the first to introduce the Norman Percheron draft horse into this part of the country and he and his brother, A.F. Carpenter, had quite a breeding establishment for these horses a quarter of a century ago. He also was the owner of some very choice pure bred Jersey cattle, which he kept for dairy purposes. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon, Jan. 3, 1915 to St. Andrew's church cemetery, Grimsby. The deceased is survived by a widow, three sons and three daughters. The sons are Stanley, at home; Rev. W.F. Carpenter, Harnings Mills; and H.L. Carpenter, Gleneda, Sask. The daughters are Mrs. Harry Clark, Hamilton; Mrs. G.A. Arnold, Allandale; Miss Hattie Carpenter, Hudson,N.Y. He is also survived by one brother, A.F. Carpenter, Phippen, Sask.
