Full Text

Harry and Mary Rebenchuk of 27 Orchard Ave. have warm thoughts about a cold, blustery day 50 years ago. The day was September 26, 1926, their wedding day, and they remember the day with happiness, despite snow flurries and cold winds. The couple, who came to Grimsby 18 years ago, are celebrating the 50th anniversary of that date on Sunday, September 26, with an open house at their home, from 2 until 5 p.m. All friends and relatives are welcome to visit. Mr. and Mrs. Rebenchuk, both natives of Russia, met in Erickson, Manitoba, where they were both working for farmers. They were married in that small prairie town. After coming to Grimsby, Mrs. Rebenchuk worked for several people. Mr. Rebenchuk worked for the late Sammy Bonham, on his farm, until he retired in 1973. Many people will recognize Mr. Rebenchuk by sight. He walks to Grimsby's downtown core every day, despite the weather, and carries back a bag of fresh goods. The couple has one son, Al, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He has one brother in Russia, and she has three, one each in Hamilton, Caledonia and Sandy Lake, Manitoba. They expect that friends and relatives, and others from Toronto and Whitby, will attend the afternoon open house, and a special mass at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, at 7:30 p.m., in commemoration of the occasion.
