Residents of Stoney Creek were thrown into a state of great excitement Monday morning on learning that Mr. Silas Hopkins, an old and highly respected farmer of Saltfleet, had met with an instant and horrible death on the railway. Mr. Hopkins went out to look at some members of his family picking stawberries in a field on the north side of the Grand Trunk track and was returning when he was struck by the 840 Express train. ... [gruesome details]... Mr. Hopkins was 75 years of age. He was the father of a large family, his sons being Dr. Hopkins, Messrs. Marshall Hopkins, C.E., Silas Hopkins Jr., and Edward and John who live at the homestead and work on the farm ...
