Full Text

A former resident of Grimsby, James G. Whittaker, died last Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital, Hamilton, in his 76th year. He and his brother, William F., owned and operated the farm now occupied by Samuel Gardham, at the foot of Elizabeth Street. The land had been purchased by their father from Adolphus Nelles, and became known as one of the best fruit farms in the district, and none was better managed. Both "Will" and "Jim" were members of the old Grimsby Band. Mrs. William Whittaker now lives at 25 Elizabeth Street. The fine brick home was built by Patrick Farrell, an Irish mason who came to Grimsby while it was yet better known as The Forty. Much of his work is still standing throughout the district to attest to good, honest craftsmanship. The first burying ground of the settlement at The Forty was located on this farm, to the north of the farmhouse. The aforesaid Patrick Farrell once lived in a small log cabin close by. The farm was purchased from the late Wm. Whittaker by H.H. Farrell, who sold it to Murray Fitch. Charles J. Emm bought it from Mrs. Fitch, and last fall sold it to the present owner, Mr. Gardham. The late Mr. Whittaker had lived in Hamilton for 32 years. He leaves his wife, the former Bertha Springstead, three sons, Fred G., Morris, and Howard, and a daughter, Mrs. Violet Shipley, all of Hamilton; also a brother, Charles, in Montreal. After service at the Marlatt Funeral Home on Friday last, interment was made in the family plot, St. Andrew's Church, Grimsby.
