Scion of one of the first United Empire Loyalist families to settle in this district in 1783, Leslie Millard Nelles, one of Grimsby's most prominent fruit growers, passed to his last reward on Monday night. He had not been in good health for some considerable time but his death was unexpected to his family and legion of friends throughout the peninsula. In his 71st year, he was born at "Stone Shanty", in North Grimsby on December 22, 1867, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Nelles. His entire life had been spent in the fruit industry. As a young man he resided at Niagara-on-the-Lake for some years, returning here 33 years ago...Surviving, beside his wife, are two sons, Malcolm S. and George, at home; two brothers, Norman, of Grimsby, and Stephen, of Regina; also two sisters, Mrs. H.F. Baker and Mrs. Agnes Lucas, both of North Grimsby. Private services were held at his late home, Main Highway East, on Wednesday afternoon, followed by service in St. Andrew's Anglican church at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. J.A. Ballard officiating. Interment was made in the family plot in St. Andrew's churchyard. Pall bearers were: Allan and William Nelles, Gilbert Wade, Herbert Gillispie [ed: Gillespie?], Nelles Rutherford, and James Walker.
