Full Text

The death occurred at the home of Mr. J.C. Gordon, Hamilton, on Sunday evening, September 21, of a former old and highly respected resident of Grimsby in the person of Mr. Thos. Rome. The late Mr. Rome came to Grimsby from Peterhead, Scotland, in the early 60's and from that time till the day of his death, was one of the district's most highly respected citizens. The deceased gentleman, shortly after coming to Grimsby, accepted the position of public school teacher and taught the 3 R's to many of Grimsby's present residents, in the little school on Elm Street, which was later moved away and is owned by Mrs. Ross, at the corner of Elm and Mountain Streets. After giving up the school work, Mr. Rome went to work for Mr. E.J. Palmer in his general store, but finally tired of this and moved away to St. Joseph, Mo. where he entered the business field on his own account. In the late 60's or early 70's the deceased moved back to Grimsby and went into partnership with the late John H. Grout in the implement manufacturing business where he remained until the death of his partner, John H. Grout, when the business was disposed of to the Grimsby Manufacturing Co. and Mr. Rome moved to Hamilton, where for a considerable time he was connected with the Bank of Hamilton. The deceased had reached the ripe old age of 86 years and was predeceased by his wife by about two years. He was a man of regular habits and was punctual as a clock in all his works, straightforward and honest as the day is long. He is a strong supporter of the Conservative party and a member of the Presbyterian Church. The remains will be taken to Georgetown for interment.
