Full Text

One of the oldest and highest respected residents of Grimsby, passed peacefully away on Monday night in the person of John Johnson at the ripe old age of 86 years. The deceased gentleman was one of the pioneers of this district and did his share towards building up the country, which he lived to see turned from the primal forest into the garden which it now is. He was born in the County of Killarney, Ireland and came to Canada when a young man of about 24, and went to work on the Northwestern Railroad which was then being constructed from London to Niagara Falls. After the completion of this line, he married and settled down in Grimsby and continued to work for the Northwestern and was connected with this [rail]road for 45 years, retiring about 15 years ago. He has been in poor health for the last year and his death was not unexpected. He leaves a widow to mourn his loss. The funeral will take place on Thursday morning at 10:00 o'clock to the R.C. Church of which he has been a lifelong member, interment taking place in the church cemetery.
