Fellow citizens and a large circle of friends learned with sincere regret of the passing of Mr. Murray Fitch, for many years one of the most highly regarded residents of the community. He was one of the few life-long residents of the town having been born here in 1857. He was in his 74th year. Residents will recall that for years his father conducted a drug store on Main Street about where the store of Miss Chester is now located. Mr. Fitch assisted his father for many years and later took over the business himself. He subsequently sold out and engaged in fruit farming, purchasing two fruit farms on the Nelles Road, which he successfully operated. He was the first to experiment with the growing of tobacco on these farms but the financial returns were not such as to encourage him to continue to grow it. The late Mr. Fitch had a reputation for doing thoroughly whatever he set out to accomplish and he was honoured and respected for his high interests and many fine qualities. Mr. Fitch later sold both farms and purchased the home of Rev. J.G. Murray, Main Street now occupied by Mr. H.H. Farrell. This home he remodelled and lived there retired for a few years after which he went back to fruit farming on the fine farm where he passed away. In politics Mr. Fitch was a lifelong and staunch Liberal.
In his younger years he was very fond of sports and was an excellent swimmer as well as an enthusiastic cricket player.
The late Mr. Fitch was apparently in good health until 2 weeks ago, when he suffered a paralytic stroke from which he never rallied.
He is survived by his wife to whom the sympathy of the community will be extended in the sad bereavement suffered.
The funeral was held from his late residence Elizabeth Street on Wednesday and was attended by fellow citizens and friends in large numbers. Following a service conducted at the home by Rev. H.S. Graham, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, interment was made in Trinity United Church cemetery.
