Jacob Book, a life-long resident of North Grimsby, passed away very suddenly of heart failure, on the road, near his home, very early on Saturday, August 3, 1918 in his 68th year. Deceased was born on the old Book homestead in the house now owned by his eldest son, Jay D. Book, near Grimsby Park corner in 1851 and had lived in that locality all his life. He followed the pursuits of agriculture and fruit farming all his life. In his younger days he was ... after the Fenian Raid ... he was known as Fighting B Squadron Second Dragoons and the next year after the Fenian Raid he was a dispatch rider carrying messages here and there through the district. He was married in 1874 to Sarah E. Davis of Clinton Township. She predeceased him about 25 years. He leaves to mourn his death 5 children, Mrs. John Dawe of Clinton Township, Jay D. Book of Grimsby East, W. Hall Book of the Customs Department, St. Catharines, Mrs. Fred J. Smith of Kenwood, New York and Miss Inez Book of Beamsville. The funeral took place on Monday, August 5th, from the home of the son Jay D. Book to St. Andrew's Church, Grimsby, where service was held. The house from which the funeral took place was the same in which deceased was born over 67 years ago. He was the last surviving son of the late Jacob Book, who owned the land on both sides of the Q & G Stone Road at Grimsby Park corner. The other sons were well known men in this locality and were the late M.E. Book, known to his many friends as Jim, who resided on the homestead and Josephus M. Book of South Grimsby.
