Full Text

Citizens of Grimsby were deeply shocked on Friday evening last, August 20th, to learn of the sudden demise in Hamilton Hospital of Miriam Lawrence, second daughter of A.F. and Mrs. Hawke, 61 Main East. The deceased young lady had been in Grimsby on her holidays, with her three sisters, at the parental home and appeared to be in excellent health. She was suddenly taken ill and removed to hospital where an operation was performed from which she seemed to be making good recovery when a sudden relapse occurred and she passed away. Miss Hawke had been a popular resident of this town since birth. She had been educated in Grimsby schools and the Ontario College of Art where she took up Commercial Designing. After finishing her art course she was connected with the Russell T. Kelley Advertising Agency of Hamilton for some time and then secured a position with the Canada Life Insurance Co., and had been with their art department for over 10 years. She is survived by her parents and three sisters, Miss Bernice and Mrs. K.J.R. Wightman of Toronto and Mrs. Richard E. Roberts of New York City. Funeral services were held from the home of her parents on Sunday afternoon and were largely attended. Rev. W.J. Watt, Trinity United church, officiated, interment being in Queen's Lawn Cemetery. Casket bearers were: Richard E. Roberts, K.J.R. Wightman, Harold Littlejohn, Harvey Hazelwood, John VanDuzer and George Marr.
