Canadian Acadcmy ol Recording Arts and Sciences on Feb 28 new rock style for Melanie RECORD REVIEWS BY STEPHEN GAUER Whats Melanie been up to Judging from Ballroom Streets her latest album the flower child troubadour of the 19605 has taken the plunge into the mainstream of rock and roll But Linda Ronstadt and the Wilson sisters of Heart neednt fear the competition Melanie may be using rock to revive sagging career but this album collection of new and old material stretches limited talent too far and the strain shows The best thing about Ballroom Streets is the rock band featured on most of the tracks the playing is con sistently tight and energetic and the arrangements make even the less successful material sound interesting The album was recorded live in the studio with minimum of overdubbing and with applause from an assembled audience and that gives Ballroom Streets refreshingly spontaneous quality Melanies singing works best on uptempo harddriving numbers like Running after Love and CycloneCandles In the Rain and lighter songs like Buckle Up and Nickel Song But when she pushes that rough vibrato too hard as she does in Beautiful Sadness Melanie comes across as secondrate Joplin Even worse are the songs that strive for significance Poet and Believe are two examples but only produce the kind of embarrassing pretension that marked the poses of the Woodstock generation Melanies strength was always the sense of humor she displayed in songs like Brand New Key and Look What They Done to My Song both included on the new album As poet shes way past her depth as rock singer she deserves plus for trying so hard Melanie Ballroom Streets Tomato223th9001li LARENA LEBARR LARK LaRena LaBarr Clark is ninthgeneration Canadian whos embarked on unique and very ambitious project recording album collection of traditional folk and popular songs Mrs Clark lives In Hawkestone north of Barrie and records her music pass ed down from members of her family at CHAYFM Authentic Canada Folk Sym bol is collection of 20 songs ranging from sea ballads to cowboy songs to popular American tunes from the turn of the century The music may be simple and straightforward but Mrs Clark singing style is deceptive She sings capella without instrumental ac companiment with strong sense of rhythm and pleasmg lilting innocence thats long been lost in North American popular music The songs on this album may appeal to only small audience of folk purists but theyre part of an important music tradi tion one worth preserving in time of massproducing pop and rock Theres nothing calculated or commercial about Mrs Clarks music and thatsd probably its most up pealing quality Shell never at tract mass audience but somehow its reassuring that Quality Records is willing to take chance with performer like Mrs Clark LaRena LcBarr Clark Authentic anadian Folk Sym bol Quality LS lliiil THE AMAZING ACES The music industrys in sistence on sticking labels on groups as theyre cellophane wrapped pieces of meat works to the detriment of groups like The Amazing rhythm Aces Although the American sextet has had one Top 30 hit Third Rate Romance tieyve never achieved the popularity they deserve The bands fifth album titled simply The Amaz ing Rhythm Aces is solid ac complishment The Aces are hard to label because they do many things well Theyre consider countryrock band but the best songs on the new album arent RHYTHM The Amazing Rhythm Aces far cry from synthetic sounds countryrock at all Love and Happiness an Al Green song comes alive with funky bluesy treatment that sounds more convincing than Green himself Say You Lied is straight country and western with cappella introduction and some fine picking on acoustic guitar banjo and man dolin third song Whispering in The Night sounds like blood Sweat and Tears at their best its slow blues that highlights lead singer Russell Smith guitarist Duncan Cameron and some fine work by the Muscle Shoals Horns Smith along with the Aces impeccably clean playing is the bands major asset He can slide easily from country to rock to blues and back again without missing beat At times he sounds like relaxed mellowed David laytonr Thomas less exciting than the canadian singer perhaps but much caster to listen to The countryrock songs on the album which are more lIl tcrcsling lyrically than musically work because Smith sings them so wcll The Amaz ing Rhythm Aces arent really amazing but the music thcy makc is wellcrafted and well performed And its far cry from the synthetic sound of groups that succeed by pander to formula music The Amazing Rhythm Acts The Amazing Rhythm Aces tABt 9022 I23 DAVID RROMRERG Listening to David Brombcrg album is like taking stroll through garden of traditional folk music
